Many students complete their undergraduate degree without taking the teacher preparation courses to teach in the k-12 system with a provisional teaching certificate (first certificate at either the elementary or secondary level). Because teacher preparation courses are undergraduate courses, students will be admitted as undergraduates using the Application for Undergraduate Admissions. In addition, applicants must submit all transcripts, Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) scores, and complete the College of Education’s Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Teacher Preparation form. (Form available from the COE Website) A personal statement and letter of recommendation are also required.
At this time, the only exception to the above admissions process is admission to a special education program. These students are admitted as master’s students to one of their graduate programs and complete both the teaching certificate and master’s degree at the same time. Therefore, the application process is the same as for any other graduate student see the Graduate Catalog or the Graduate Student Orientation and Handbook on the Graduate School’s Website.
The Teacher Certification Office (206 Porter Building) provides general advising sessions on a regular basis. See their Website, as noted above, for days, times, and locations. Following the general session, advising appointments may be made with Christine Lancaster @ 734.487. 0275.
Students seeking a second teaching certificate professional certificate, should apply as a graduate student and obtain advising from Nancy Dahl @ 734-487-0275. Courses for the professional certificate are typically graduate courses. Students seeking additional teaching endorsements would also work with Nancy Dahl and be admitted as a graduate student.
