I want to transfer/use graduate credits completed either as an EMU undergraduate or during a previous EMU graduate program.

1. Obtain a Petition for Modification or Waiver of the Graduate School Academic and Administrative Policies form from:

  • the Graduate School, 200 Boone Hall or

  • the Office of Records and Registration, 303 Pierce Hall or

2. Complete the form by:

  • indicating the desire to use previously completed EMU graduate courses on the current program of study

  • signing it

  • obtaining the graduate program coordinator/advisor's signature

3. Return form and a copy of the program of study:

  • to the Graduate School, 200 Boone Hall (fax 734-487-0050)

  • prior to application for graduation

4. Remember:

  • Fifteen credit hours of 500-level work may be completed as an EMU undergraduate student. When this petition is processed, Records will verify that the course work can be moved from the undergraduate transcript to a new graduate transcript. If credits were used for degree requirements or to determine a GPA for graduating with honors (i.e., cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude), then the credits CAN NOT BE MOVED or used on the new program of study.

  • A master’s or MFA student may use six graduate credit hours from a previous EMU graduate degree. The department as documented on the student’s program of study must approve the courses. Specialist and doctoral program policies may vary as to how many previously completed EMU credits can be transferred.
