I received an E grade in a course that I never attended or thought I dropped.

1. Obtain a Petition for Modification or Waiver of the Graduate School Academic and Administrative Policies form (see left column under "Related Links") from:

  • the Graduate School, 200 Boone Hall or

  • the Office of Records and Registration, 303 Pierce Hall or

2. Complete the form by:

  • signing it

  • indicating you need a retroactive withdraw (no tuition reimbursed) from a specified course taken in a specific semester (include course and CRN numbers).

  • obtaining the instructor's verification/signature that you never attended the course or early on you indicated your intent to drop the course.

  • obtaining the department head signature

3. Return form:

  • to the Graduate School, 200 Boone Hall (fax 734-487-0050)

  • the semester following course enrollment

4. Remember:

  • Not showing up for class DOES NOT formally drop or withdraw you from the course.

  • Merely informing the instructor that you will no long be attending the class DOES NOT formally drop or withdraw you from the course.

  • ONLY YOU CAN DROP YOU FROM A COURSE. A faculty member can not drop you from a course.

  • If medical, family, employment or military issues were factors for the withdrawal, provide documentation or explanation with the petition.
