Some of my coursework is out of date and I need to repeat or validate/update the content.

When course work is older than the six to ten-year time frame, you must file a petition to extend the life of your program (see previous section) and in addition the department may want you to:

1.
Repeat/retake the course.

  • You register for the course as you normally would and pay full tuition.

  • If you previously received a B or better grade, you MUST contact the Office of Records and Registration so they can change the credit status of the course for the first time you completed it. It gets changed from credit to noncredit. When they do this your new grade for the course will count for credit and will appear as a part of your current GPA. If this is not done, the new course will automatically not count for credit.

2. Validate/update the course content (your advisor feels you need to update yourself with information that is new since you took the course but repeating the entire course is not necessary).

  • Obtain the Petition/Authorization for Credit by Examination or Validation form (see right column under "Download") from:

    • the Graduate School, 200 Boone Hall or

    • the Office of Records and Registration, 303 Pierce Hall or

    • click on "PDF" on the right and print copy.

  • Complete the top portion of the form by:

    • identifying the course and instructor with whom you will work

    • signing the form yourself

    • obtaining the instructor's signature

    • obtaining your graduate program advisor's signature

    • obtaining the department head's signature

  • Turn in the form to the Graduate School, 200 Boone Hall, for approval.

  • After it has been signed, the form will be returned to you. Take the form to the Cashier's Office, 201 Pierce Hall, and pay the equivalent of one graduate credit of tuition. Keep the form.

  • Complete assigned work for validation. The instructor will then sign the bottom of the form indicating that satisfactory work has been completed.

  • Return the form to the Graduate School for final signature and routing.

Note: a maximum of 9 semester hours may be validated and the coursework may not be older than ten years.
