Purpose

To reward graduate students for excellence for a particular research project, culminating in the submission of a completed thesis/dissertation, germane to their program of study. The term “research” is used in its broadest sense.

Award

Two $250 cash awards will be made by the Graduate School. One award will be made at the end of the fall semester, and one at the end of the winter semester. An appropriate plaque of recognition will be presented to the winners at the Graduate Research Fair in March.

Eligibility

The applicant must be a currently enrolled EMU graduate student in the final stages of completing his/her thesis/dissertation and degree or a recent graduate (within one year) having a completed thesis/dissertation. Students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The student must be:

  • in good academic standing
  • show superior initiative/effort with his/her scholarly work
  • be either a part-time or full-time student

Application Procedure

Complete the award application, a draft or final copy of the thesis/dissertation and submit them to the Graduate School, 200 Boone Hall on or before November 15 for a fall award or March 15 for a winter award.

Submit at least two letters of recommendation from EMU faculty familiar with the thesis/dissertation. These letters should specifically address the quality of the student’s research, its originality, and potential contribution to the field of study.

Describe your research in understandable terms for the general public. Use no more than two word-processed pages. The following information should be included:

  • statement of research/project objectives
  • procedural steps/methodology
  • outcomes or findings

One thesis may be selected to be sent to the Midwestern Association of Graduate School’s Annual Thesis Competition. This competition carries with it a monetary award for the national winners.

Approval

A review committee will comprise no fewer than five graduate advisors, one from each college. They will meet, review applications, and make final recommendations to the Graduate Dean, who will make the final selection. The winner will be notified in writing with copy sent to the academic department/school.
