Summary

Purpose The primary purpose of this fellowship program is to increase the number of students from underrepresented populations pursuing academic degrees in post-secondary education in the State of Michigan by providing financial support. To be considered for this program a student must be pursuing a masters or doctoral degree in a Michigan post-secondary educational institution.
Program Guidelines Masters Fellows must pursue and attain a masters degree within four (4) years of initially receiving this fellowship award. Applicants must either pursue a doctoral degree at a Michigan post-secondary educational institution within one (1) year after attaining their Masters degree or begin a teaching or administrative career in a 2 or 4 year post-secondary institution and continue this employment for a minimum of three (3) years.

Doctoral Fellows must pursue a doctoral degree at a Michigan post-secondary educational institution. Applicants must obtain a doctoral degree within eight (8) years of attaining their masters degree, or spend an equivalent of two and one half (2 1/2) years at a masters level of study within a doctoral program. Fellows must also begin a teaching or administrative career at a post-secondary educational institution within one (1) year after attaining their doctoral degree, and remain in employment at a post-secondary institution for period of not less than three (3) years.

Successful applicants may use the program award to offset educational expenses. Recipients for each award must remain in good academic standing at all times on the fellowship (3.0 GPA), as defined by the Graduate School at Eastern Michigan University. They must enroll in and complete a minimum of 6 graduate credit hours each semester. All applicants must be accepted into an EMU degree program. All applicants must also be U.S. citizens and considered by Eastern Michigan University to be an underrepresented populations in an academic field.

The King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Masters Fellowship cannot exceed $20,000.00 per recipient. The King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Doctoral Fellowship cannot exceed $35,000.00 per recipient. *The amount of each award depends upon the specific needs of the student. Hence, the amount awarded may be less than the amounts list above. Recipients are eligible to apply for the KCP Future Faculty Program Fellowship offered at other Michigan doctoral granting institutions.

Application Process Applicants must complete the Financial Assistance Application for Graduate Students Form along with the Application for King-Chavez-Parks Fellowship Program form. Both application forms are available for download in the right column of this Webpage. Applications are also available at the Graduate School or from the Website (www.gradschool.emich.edu/). Applications and support materials will be reviewed when all application materials are received and should be submitted to the Graduate School, 200 Boone Hall, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI 48197. A campus committee chaired by the Graduate School Dean will make the selection. Applicants will be notified in writing of the committee’s decision. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Materials are due February 15 for funding consideration for the next academic year.

An Award Notification will be sent to the fellowship recipients. The recipients must accept or decline the award by the date designated on the letter.


Please note, funding depends upon State of Michigan appropriations for this award; notification of which occurs in October. The KCP Fellowship shall be defaulted and considered a loan subject to repayment in full to the State of Michigan if the student fails to attain the degree within the required time, complete the employment requirements, or maintain good academic standing at Eastern Michigan University.
