Thank you for sponsoring a graduate student for the Graduate Research Fair. If you fill out the Nomination Form, please be sure all information is provided and accurate (e.g., name spelling, address). Items on the form will show up in print, on the Web, on a certificate, and on a plaque.
You will receive a copy of the letter that is sent to the student indicating the time and location of his/her presentation. Student presentations and posters should be informative yet geared toward a general audience rather than a discipline-specific audience. Be aware that oral presenters who want to use PowerPoint must submit their presentation to the Graduate School by March 19, 2008. All presentations will be copied onto CD-ROM to improve the transition between presenters, reduce the spread of viruses, and reduce technical difficulties. Students will NOT be allowed to insert disks into the computers in the presentation rooms. If they miss the deadline, they may bring overheads of the PowerPoint presentation.
It takes special nurturing to encourage students to share their work in front of such a diverse audience. A number of students back out at the last minute so contact between the time of nomination and the day of the event will be CRITICAL. We have asked students to contact both you and the Graduate School should they not be able to present that day. If you hear from the student, please contact us and we will do likewise. In previous years, faculty have been surprised at the last minute to learn that their student was not presenting.
On the day of the Graduate Research Fair, the sessions are to begin promptly so please be on time. We prefer that you arrive a little early so the room moderator knows you are present and can introduce you along with the student. If you are unable to attend the session, let the Graduate School know and we will inform the room moderator.
Student presenters should be told to plan on arriving early and staying for the entire session. Arriving for just his/her 15-minute talk is very rude. We are seeing more of this happening each year.
There will be refreshments available. A lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. and we hope you can stay. If you plan to stay for lunch, RSVP to our office at 734-487-0042, no later than March 17, 2008. Awards will be announced during the Awards Ceremony. A keynote speaker sponsored by Sigma Xi will speak at 6:00 p.m.
We hope you will be able to attend many of the presentation sessions. Enjoy learning about the variety of work EMU graduate students accomplish campus-wide. This will be a wonderful day to celebrate graduate education! Thank you again for your participation and student sponsorship!
